This is a first preview of a JavaView-based interactive earth viewer.
Be patient when visiting this site for the first time since the earth
and cloud textures (about 2000*1000 pixels) as well as a JavaView library
must be downloaded.
The Earth applet allows interactive measurements on the
earth.
MEASURE mode allows to measure the distance between two points on earth. Use
the left-mouse to pick a first and then a second location. The applet
automatically calculates and displays the shortest connection which is an
arc of geodesic curve. The length of the curve, called the geodesic distance,
is displayed in the status bar at the bottom.
PICK mode allows to pick locations on earth with a left-mouse click. The
longitude/latitude position is displayed in the text fields and at the
picked location.
Smoothly rotate the earth in ROTATE mode, or directly jump to a favourite
location using the predefined city list.
The cloud layer is optional and can be enabled using the checkbox SHOW CLOUDS. The
transparency of the cloud layer can be continuously adjusted from fully
transparent to maximal cloudiness <currently disabled>. The surface layer
can also be hidden.
